I Decide Club

The I DECIDE club of DPS Noida was formed in 2007 under the guidelines
of UNODC and aims to create awareness among students regarding issues like
HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, peer pressure, bullying, discipline etc. The club
was officially launched in April 2008 and the badging ceremony took place
in January 2009.

Teacher Incharges : Mrs. Rekha Pillai, Mrs. Avantika Arora

The “I Decide” Club is a club that was initiated by DPS Society
to empower the children to make the right choices.

This year 2011-12 the club has adopted a new modus operandi. To reach
out to the larger audience it has taken upon itself the task to address
certain issues in the assembly. For conducting intensive small group interactions
on certain sensitive issues, the interaction occurs in the classroom itself.

In the second week of May, an assembly targeting the appropriate turnout
of a depsite was conducted. The importance of a meticulous and carefully
dressed person was highlighted. The pride that the students feel on wearing
their school ties and belts with the school logo on them was also discussed.

In the months of July and August , ‘SAY NO TO TOBACCO’-a
set of workshops was conducted for all sections of class eight in the
presence of Mrs. Rekha Pillai and Mrs. Avantika Arora. The two peer educators
Saumya and Astha assisted the teachers.

It was a good experience as the students shared their view points on
smoking. Thereafter, chits were distributed amongst students in which
names of different substances were written e.g. Arsenic, benzene, tar,
carbon monoxide etc. The harmful effects of these components were discussed
and students were told that these were components of cigarettes.

The students were made aware of the ill effects of Smoking and Passive
Smoking i.e. effects of the components on their immune system and the
respiratory system were highlighted.

A short skit showcasing the different ways of saying NO to a person was
conducted. The students seemed to be very interested in what was told
to them.

A game of tug of war was played too in some sections. One leader had
his name start with the letter ‘R’ and the other with the
letter ‘P’. ‘R’ won the tug of war. A discussion
on the R-risk factors and P-protective factors was conducted. The role
of the protective factors like family, good friends, religion, self confidence,
values, etc was highlighted, ensuring that the children did not give in
to peer pressure.

I DECIDE CLUB (2011-2012)

The I Decide Club is a club with a difference.

It aims to empower the members with the ability to make the right decisions and to spread the values of responsibility and sincerity. The club has been conducting workshops in order to spread these values patterns.

This year, however we have experimented with some new methods to reach out to a larger population. We used the school assembly as a platform. In April, a special assembly for class VI TO XII was conducted to address the issue of discipline. In May, another special assembly for class VI TO XII was also conducted to highlight the values of punctuality, turnout where the students took great pride in wearing their school uniform and the tie.

In July/August, an effort was made to reach out students in smaller groups. The teachers went from class to class holding sessions on “Say No To Tobacco.” A set of workshops were conducted for all sections of class VIII in the presence of Mrs.Avantika Arora and Mrs.Rekha Pillai. The two peer educators Saumya and Astha assisted the teachers. It was a good experience as the students shared their view points on smoking. Thereafter, harmful affects of arsenic, benzene, tar, carbon monoxide were discussed and students were told that these were components of cigarettes. Students were made aware of the ill effects of smoking and passive smoking. A short skit showcasing the different ways of saying NO was conducted. A game of tug of war was played too. Their aim was to bring out the importance of the risk ® and protective (P) factors. The importance of protective factors like – family, good friends, religion, self confidence etc was brought out.

After the exams in October, the club targeted class VII on November 26, December 5 and 8,2011 a three hour long session on life skills was conducted by the students (peer educators). The team comprised of Mrs. Rekha Pillai, Mrs. Avantika Arora, Devika Agarwal, Eman Rahman, Rupaksh Paul, Harjas Chattha, Saharsh Arora, Dhruv Oberoi, Ritika,Lakshmi Saraf,Vasundhara Mathur and Saumya Kaushik. Students shared their personal experiences of sibling interaction. The teacher’s performed role plays to depict certain communication skills and  methods.
